Horizons Martial Arts and Team GD Jiu-Jitsu Nor*Phx held a Holiday Food Drive from Dec. 12 – Dec. 22, 2011. With shortly over a week to collect food, the Academy collected close to 300 POUNDS of non perishable goods for donation. The Food was delivered to the John C Lincoln Health Network’s Desert Mission Food Bank located at 9229 N. Fourth St. Phoenix, AZ 85020 in Sunnyslope. The Desert Mission Food Bank offers help to the hungry and those in need of nutritional support by providing food for more than 1,600 families each month. The food bank’s mission is to provide emergency food assistance in a dignified and respectful manner to all individuals and families within our community. HMA and GD Jiu-Jitsu Nor*Phx is proud to be involved with such an organization, and looks forward to helping more in the future. The next tournament the team is going to compete at is the 7th Arizona International Open. Please remember to ALWAYS check/consult with Swag before registering for any competition. “NORTH PHX…WORK HARD!”

The 7th AZ International Open of BJJ will take place on March 3rd & 4th at the Phoenix College (North Gym) located at 1202 W. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 8013.

This event was SOLD OUT last year, so registration was closed early. Don’t wait until the last minute to register!

BLACK OPEN CLASS DIVISION is back! There will be a Black Belt Open class division paying $3000 in Prizes! First place winner will receive $2500, while the 2nd place will receive $500. BJJ Fans will enjoy a weekend of competition and watch high caliber black belt matches with some of the best competitors in the world.
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition will offer kids, juveniles, Adult (Male and Female), Masters and Senior Divisions.

IMPORTANT: Registration will be closed for the Kids division after 280 competitors. Registration for Juveniles, Adults, Masters, seniors, and Women will be closed after 500 competitors.

GD Jiu-Jitsu Events will be offering FREE tournament T-Shirts to ALL competitors!

SPECTATOR FEES: Saturday $10, Sunday $10

Each competitor must fill out the registration form online. Pre-registration fee is $60 for the adults and juveniles (16-17 yrs) or and $50 for the kids division until Monday, February 20th. After this date, $70 for adults and juveniles and, $60 for the kidThes.

All registrations must be received by Monday, February 27th by 11:59 pm. No registrations after this date. Registration fees are non-refundable. No exceptions.

The brackets will be released before the tournament. On Friday, March 2nd, the brackets will be available online at our website.

Adults Division – The tournament is single elimination. Medals will be awarded to the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place of each division. Athletes will not compete for the third place. Two bronze medals will be given

Kids Division – Every competitor will receive a 3 1/2″ medal. This is a single elimination tournament, but if the child loses in the semi-final, they will compete again. Top 4 are guaranteed in the podium.

The top 5 schools in the adult and kids division will receive team trophies.

Nova Uniao AZ wins the 2012 All America’s Tournament in California

: Team Nova Uniao AZ at the 2012 NABJJF All Americas

This past weekend, Nova União traveled with 27 competitors (7 kids, 20 adults) to Carson, CA to compete at the 2012 All Americas Jiu-Jitsu Tournament promoted by the NABJJF. Despite having a smaller team than those with the home field advantage, Nova União was able to secure the 1st place trophy in the adult divison with 20 competitors and 18 medals. Every single point counted as Nova União won with just a one point lead over 2nd place. This accomplishment was the product of a great over-all team effort which includes all the coaches, assistant coaches, training partners, and all the hard work and preparation put forward by all the competitors.

The stand-outs of the Team include Josh Rodriguez who had 7 matches throught the day to place 2nd in his weight and 3rd in the Open, John Owning who won his division and was able to rack up over 50 points within 3 matches and land 2 submissions, and David Larson who even though had a rough day at his weight, was able to come back ready and composed to make it all the way to the finals of the Open Class and secure important points for the Team. Special thanks go to ALL the competitors who competed in the Open Class to try to help win the Team those extra points necessary: Mark Thrun, Heath Flicker, Brain Wade, Jon Wagner, David Larson, Josh Rodriguez, and Jennifer Bann.

*Josh Guerra and Brandon Sees also traveled and fought in this tournament on behalf of GD Jiu-Jitsu Nor*Phx.

Team GD Jiu-Jitsu Nor*Phx Took @ the 1st Nova Uniao Invitational

The 2011 Jiu-Jitsu season wrapped up with the Nova Uniao Invitational on, Dec.3rd 2011, at the Broadway Rec. Center in Mesa, AZ. GD Jiu-Jitsu Nor*Phx was represented by 8 competitors (Brad Bailey, Michael Romeo, Josh Guerra, Brandon Sees, Casey Quist, Jospeh Buccifero, Larry Puchta) and brought home 8 medals (2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze) This performance contributed to winning the team title as part of Team GD Jiu-Jitsu. Great job to all the competitors and keep this momentum going into the 2012 season. “NORTH PHX…WORK HARD !!!

The weekend of December 3 and 4, 2011 was a memorable one for the Nova União team in the United States, as the inaugural Nova União Invitational, a two-day tournament open only to NU schools, gathered 85 competitors in a very friendly atmosphere. Competitors of all belts fought their hearts out displayed tremendous attitude. The highlight of the tournament was the senior 1 black belt match where Paul Nava (AZ) defeated Rod Wilson (NV) by 2 to 0.

During the tournament, Gustavo Dantas inducted the team’s two greatest IBJJF champions, Robson Moura and Vitor “Shaolin”, into the Nova União USA Hall of Fame. “Besides the fact that they are my favorite Jiu-Jitsu competitors to watch, they are also personal friends. So it was very emotional for me to have them here supporting the event and seeing how my hard work is paying off.”

On Sunday, 90 lucky attendees participated in the Fusion Seminar with Robson Moura, Vitor “Shaolin” and Gustavo Dantas. “It was a great event overall. We are producing a DVD from the event, which will include 26 final matches from the NU Invitational, the Hall of Fame Ceremony, and the Seminar. Bonus features with more advanced positions, behind-the-scenes footage and more will be available.”

First SUPER FUSION SEMINAR

The 1st Nova Uniao Jiu-Jitsu Invitational will take place on December 3rd,2011 at the Broadway Rec Center located at 59 E. Broadway Rd, Mesa,AZ 85252. This tournament is limited strictly to Nova Uniao Association Members. ALL COMPETITORS MUST COMPETE WITH AT LEAST ONE NOVA UNIAO PATCH!

SUPER FUSION Seminar (Open to the Public)

Featuring Robson Moura, Gustavo Dantas and Special guests, Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro and Bruno Bastos

In Conjunction with the tournament, a huge event will be taking place on Sunday, December 4th. Going for the 3rd edition in Arizona, the FUSION Seminar taught by Robson Moura & Gustavo Dantas with have two special guest teachers, Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro and the Nova Uniao’s most active Black Belt competitor, Bruno Bastos.
The class will have a format with about 75% drilling techniques, and 25% training (Sparring). The event will take place at the Broadway Rec Center located at 59 E. Broadway Rd, Mesa,AZ 85251 from 11 am to 2 pm, and all schools are invited to the Super Fusion Seminar.

3rd Southwest BJJ Classic a Success for GDJiujitsu NOR PHX!

The 3rd Southwest BJJ Classic, hosted at Phoenix College, proved to be another great event for GDJiujitsu and particularly GDJiujitsu North Phoenix! With only 8 competitors, GDJiujitsu North Phoenix captured 12 medals. Standouts of the tournament were Noah Indahl, Josh Guerra, Jon Wagner, and Xavier Hernandez, who all won gold in their respective divisions, or in the absolute division. Xavier, an rising star in the Team GDJiujitsu North Phoenix stable of fighters won both of his matches by submission, earning gold in his first tournament ever. Colton Kleinman, Brandon Sees, Casey Quist, Travis Schwartzlander, Brad Bailey, and Mike Romeo all fought well and represented GDJiujitsu North Phoenix with professionalism, sportsmanship, and good technique, while placing in their divisions as well.

Congratulations to all who competed! We look forward to many more great showings from this team in the future.
